Responsibilities
- Keep automation as the primary focus and ensure the design is tightly coupled with various automation to reduce manual work
- Write clear design documents and articulate technical decisions and trade-offs to peers and stakeholders.
Requirements
- You’ll be at the heart of all things Databases: automating the lifecycle of AWS Aurora instances, working closely with application teams to analyze Database performance and innovating in building Marqeta’s next-generation, highly available and resilient Database solutions.
- experience as a backend engineer and a Bachelor's degree. In lieu of a degree, 7+ years of relevant experience may suffice.
- Experienced with cloud native databases (AWS preferred), including transactional RDBMS such as Aurora, MySQL, and Postgres, as well as NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB or MongoDB .
- Experienced in IaaC, automation and orchestration tools (Terraform, AWS Step Function, etc.).
- Solid understanding of database administration: internals, query tuning, indexing, and performance metrics.
- Proficient in Python. •
- Experience with Linux commands and shell scripting
- Strong sense of ownership — you follow through, raise issues proactively, and take accountability for your work.
- Curious and committed to continuous learning — you actively keep up with industry trends and apply new knowledge to your work.
- Database fleet management. AI tooling fluency Basics in Java •
- Experience with payments or the FinTech space •
- Experience with ProxySQL and/or RDS Proxy Your Manager

- The new-hire base salary range for this position, reflected in CAD, is: 116,000 - 145,000

- As Marqeta’s Senior Cloud Database Engineer, you will join our Cloud Database Engineering team wherein you will be responsible for all databases that power Marqeta’s card issuing platform.

- Be part of a 24x7 on-call rotation supporting all services the Database Engineering teams owns
- Contribute to the design of high availability and disaster recovery solutions for database architecture
- Work on initiatives including but not limited to platform architecture, database partitioning, sharding, and the continuous evolution of the database footprint to support business growth.
- Work on the root cause analysis, remediation and document efforts to effectively minimize incidents.
- Contribute to monitoring and alerting practices using tools like Datadog.
- Experienced in cloud based high availability, disaster recovery, and distributed systems including replication and failover.
